GPT-3's Thoughts on The Guiding Principals of The Relicans

I've had a 30+ year career across spectrum from System and DevOps to SRE type work to (a lot of) Software Engineering, and I love helping others to grow in their careers.

The Relicans have a list of ten words which encapsulate our shared values across the team. I do not know if they have been publicly shared anywhere, so here they are:

  1. Humor
  2. Community
  3. Authenticity
  4. Empathy
  5. Enthusiasm
  6. Honesty
  7. Respect
  8. Curiosity
  9. Diversity
  10. Humility

One of the many capabilities of GPT-3 is an impressive ability to transform content into another form, often with minimal guidance, and often without even needing any concrete examples.

This morning, as I was looking at our list, I wondered what GPT-3 might do with it, if given a prompt asking it to transform those words into something that is simpler and easier to understand.

I gave it the following prompt:

My second grader asked me to simplify these words:
"""
1. humor
2. community
3. authenticity
4. empathy
5. enthusiasm
6. honesty
7. respect
8. curiosity
9. diversity
10. humility
"""
I rephrased for her, in plain English that a second grader can understand:
"""

It understood what I wanted. Here are The Relicans' shared values, in plain English that a second grader can understand:

  1. Being silly.
  2. Having friends.
  3. Being yourself.
  4. Feeling what others feel.
  5. Being excited.
  6. Being honest.
  7. Treating others the way you want to be treated.
  8. Not being afraid to try new things.
  9. Having different kinds of friends.
  10. Being a good person.

I kind of wish that I had a t-shirt with those on it, now.

I love every part of this, especially that each value (even ones that overlap a bit) translated to distinctly different concepts!

I can't tell what my favorite is but I really love that it starts with "being silly" :)
